On the 20th of November, we successfully hosted 12 series of workshops for 120 Year 5 students at CWBS. Our wonderful volunteers guided the students through content including the scientific method, changes in matter, and physical, chemical, reversible, and irreversible changes.

Students had a lot of fun engaging in practical activities, such as observing the melting rate of ice and making their own oobleck stress balls to take home!

Collab with Hope of The City: Basic Chemistry

The basic chemistry workshop provides students with an interactive and engaging introduction to basic concepts of chemistry, including: atoms, states of matter, acids and alkali. Participating in hands-on experiments, such as condensing water and creating stress balls, students will gain a firsthand understanding of the remarkable power of chemistry.
Collab with Hope of The City: Astronomy
The astronomy workshop equips students with the ability to identify and explain different celestial bodies within our solar system (this includes planets and their characteristics). Through a multitude of interactive activities, students will gain the opportunity to visualise and apply their newfound knowledge. These activities include constructing their very own constellation and participating in a planet walk and quiz!
Collab with Hope of The City: Basic Engineering
The basic engineering workshop highlights the necessity of physics and engineering in our daily lives. Students will be introduced to fascinating engineering topics, such as robotics, and will have the chance to apply their newfound knowledge through hands-on activities. Children will have opportunities to test out their newfound knowledge through exciting challenges and activities. This workshop aims to spark students' interest in the world of engineering and its practical applications.

Dance​
The dance workshop is an active and fun-filled experience that helps students understand the benefits of dance in maintaining physical health. Participants will have the opportunity to relax through learning basic dance moves, improving their coordination, creativity, and self-confidence in the process.

Human Body

The human body workshop allows students to explore the different systems that make up the human body. With interactive games such as Simon Says and practical activities using play-doh, students gained a deeper understanding of the body's structure and functions, as well as how these different systems work together to maintain life.

First Aid and Medicine

Students observed volunteer demonstrations, engaging in hands-on activities to learn about the human body and to develop practical first aid skills. One activity that was particularly enjoyable involved recreating and roleplaying responses to first aid scenarios, which consolidated the students’ understanding in this learning experience.

Astronomy
The astronomy workshop offered students a chance to explore the wonders of the cosmos that exist beyond our planet. The volunteers led the students in a planet quiz, and guided them to create their own constellations through arts and crafts. By connecting art and science, students were able to unleash their creativity and deepen their understanding of astronomy.

Basic Chemistry
What's better in chemistry than hands on practical explanation? To kick off our first ever Basic Chemistry workshop, volunteers demonstrated the phenomenon of condensation by exhibiting how water vapor forms water droplets. The concept of a non-newtonian fluid was exemplified through Oobleck. Students learned about its unique properties, and through their newfound knowledge, created a DIY stress ball.

Marine Pollution
This workshop educated students on the significance of oceans in sustaining our ecosystems. Covering topics such as marine pollution, its sources, and its impact on marine life were discussed. Additionally, students engaged in interactive projects, such as creating illustrations depicting polluted oceans. As a culmination of the program, students made a pledge to actively safeguard the oceans by implementing the knowledge they gained.

Environmental Awareness
Volunteers and CYLF organized a workshop to raise environmental awareness among students. The workshop began with an important introduction about understanding the consequences of our actions and the connection between humans and the environment. To encourage creativity and sustainability, the students enthusiastically took part in an Upcycled crafts activity. They used materials like colored paper, bottle caps, and egg cartons to create colorful artworks, such as animal sculptures and decorations, showcasing the idea of repurposing and recycling.
Collab with SoCo Poverty: Environmental Pollution
During this workshop, students at SoCo learned about the different types of pollution and their causes, as well as the importance of protecting the environment and how we can contribute our part. We had some engaging activities, which the students actively participated to illustrate a polluted ocean to reinforce their understanding of environmental contamination.

Dance
Who doesn't want to have some fun? In this workshop, students were exposed to some new dance skills and had a great time joining us in a round of Just Dance. They replicated various dance techniques and executed a flawless dance performance.

Human Body
Throughout the workshop, students learned about the function of human body systems, including the muscular and skeletal systems. They were intrigued by some remarkable facts about our human body, such as the fact that the human brain has more nerve cells than stars in the Milky Way galaxy!

Scratch Coding 1
Students at SoCo learned how to code using Scratch, a child and beginner-friendly programming software. They created simple projects which animated characters to run and walk, and presented them at the end. It was quite a fruitful session!

First Aid + Medicine
In this workshop, students at SoCo leant about the recovery position, ways to treat wounds and a short introduction to the immune system. This workshop successfully provided the kids with fundamental first-aid knowledge, which would be vital in case of any emergencies!

Food Science
Diet is an important aspect of life! Students at SoCo learned about various important minerals and vitamins present in different food groups. Volunteers demonstrated this in an activity in which they assembled a food pyramid based on which foods we should prioritize implementing in our diet!

Collab with SoCo Poverty: Scratch Coding 2
To conclude our last workshop with SoCo, volunteers ventured deeper into teaching the students the wonder of scratch. The students animated their favorite Disney characters and constructed creative games. It was a session that was thoroughly enjoyed!

Collab with PSCHK: Yoga and Dance
In this workshop, we worked with children at the PSCHK Hoi Lai Children Development Centre. Split into two groups based on individual interests, we focused on dance routines and pair yoga poses separately.
ITS Foundation International Youth Day Event
We had the honour to be featured at the ITS Foundation International Youth Day event! We met different youth-led organisations and got to showcase our work. Most importantly, we gave out Funcation merchandise such as customised stickers and pens!
Collab with PSCHK: Dance
In this workshop, children had immense fun dancing along with their favourite Just Dance videos on Youtube in small groups. They also learnt about the physical, emotional, and mental benefits of dance.
Collab with Teensinai, Zenerations, Superposition: STEM Workshop
In this workshop, children had hands-on experience in STEM: science experiments, scratch coding, building wooden toy puzzles, and making a spaghetti marshmallow tower!
HKCIN x Asbury Methodist Primary School: Fitness and Dance
In this workshop, children learnt about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through yoga, dance, and meditation. Children, volunteers, and even teachers all enjoyed partaking in dance routines and fun yoga challenges!
Collab with HKCIN: Science Experiments
In this workshop, children learnt about simple science theories by conducting fun experiments, such as the process of diffusion demonstrated by the M&M'S. Other experiments include, lava lamp, exploding volcano, magic milk and more!
